"m" is for

..."make" someone happy AND "mystery" socks!

i want to make someone happy by giving away a copy of the joy of sox! here's the deal. leave me a comment ON THIS POST telling me the strangest thing you have in your knitting bag and why it's there. i keep a small superball in my knitting bag. it's perfect for sticking in sock toes while you are trying to even out that little kitchener graft! strange but it works. or if you are more normal than that, you can leave me a comment telling me why you think you deserve the book or how/why you got into sock knitting. once upon a time, i honestly did think it was strange for people to be hand knitting socks!

deadline for posting a comment will be tuesday, september 15th! us residents only, this time. sorry. please leave me a way to contact you should you be the lucky winner.

and the final clue for the carefree mystery sock kal went out over the weekend. so i can share some pictures with you.

my pattern still doesn't have a real name...
kind of like the empress of fantasia in neverending story

it's a mystery sock
pathetic, huh?!

crystal palace yarn - panda wool (ultramarine)
us 1.5 (2.5mm) needles
i love them but i only wish i had added some sparkly beads

i kept wondering when they would get cute!

I don't think it's strange but it's certainly unique and I LOVE mine (and use it A LOT!!) It's called a Page Up:
http://www.coolsafetyproducts.com/site/898652/page/720995?gclid=CKuBitLe4pwCFZQM2godxlZfZQ

I use mine everyday and everyone who sees it wants one! It's great for holding your pattern/chart while taking up minimal space.

I had wanted to try sock knitting for awhile after I first learned to knit, but whenever I went to yarn stores to check out their sock yarn, there was usually only a small selection of scratchy (to me) wool yarn. A few years ago my non-knitting mom asked if there was anything I'd want from a yarn store that was in a shopping village she was going to be visiting. I told her that if she could find some soft non-wool sock yarn, I would like some.

Lo and behold, she bought me 2 skeins of Panda Cotton in Faded Jeans. It was the softest, prettiest sock yarn I had ever seen! I knit my first pair of socks using Sensational Knitted Socks by Charlene Schurch and I was hooked! I've been knitting socks pretty regulary ever since.

nothing too strange in my knitting bag....maybe a good book!! always wanted to make socks but my knitting store lady said.. WHY???? she had a small place... no sock yarn. no help. When she passed on I decided now was the time to learn. I bought those "sticks" and tried to make a circle. just wasn't happening so I took a class... first pair of socks cost me $105... EEEEKKK.(that's ALOT) but it taught me all I needed to get started. that was a year ago and now it seems all I make is socks!! I love the almost instant gratification. AND I get to wear something handknit everyday!well in the winter anyway. I would love to have a sock book. don't have too many of those!! I can be reached as Loique on ravelry.. .thanks for listening. Lois

Nothing terribly weird. I think the oddest thing right now would be a bobby pin – for holding hair or yarn. Why I like socks? It’s like dim sum to me, which literally translates to “a bit of heart.” I like that you can try so many techniques and patterns in a small project. Just about everyone seems to enjoy the feel of socks too. Plus sock yarns can be any crazy colour you enjoy – without one being mistaken for Bozo the Clown (in larger garment of the same colourway).

I got into knitting socks for several reasons. The yarn is lovely, and since socks only use a skein or two, I can justify the expense. As soon as knitting a part of the sock gets boring (I'm easily bored), another process takes its place. And it's fun to match the yarn to a pattern.

What I've seen of the book so far looks fabulous.

Book? How'd I miss that? I'll need to re-read your previous posts as I must've skimmed over them too quickly. Gotta buy one, for sure!

As for strange little things in my knitting bag, the only one I have is my little toy nun from Tina's Nunchuck kit that Irishgirlie gave me. It's entirely useless 'cept to bring back memories of my first BMFA RSC Sock Camp when a bunch of us starting talking about growing up in Catholic schools.

I have a 35mm film container filled with dog treats for my little Ebby girl. She is my chihuahua that joins me when I knit in public. Not sure what draws more attention, my knitting or Ebby. Sometimes, when I have the right bag with me, she is in the bag too...LOL

Enjoyed the mystery sock a lot, can't wait to finish it and post photos of my own. Thanks! Deborah

Ooh, that is a gorgeous sock! Beautiful pattern :)

At first I thought I had nothing odd in my bag, but then I remembered that I'm carrying around a Tit Bit (from Knitty) that I knitted recently for a friend who needs one, because I'm looking for the right stuffing; I've gotten a few strange looks when I pull it out to get to other things in my bag...

The oddest thing I have in my knitting bag is a small flashlight. I use to when the lighting isn't the best and I need to check my knitting. It's come in handy several times!

I have a little pillow 2X2 inches. A knitting friend of mine gave it to me at knit night and it has been in there now for about a year. I also have a bunch of closed gold rings from a bead store. I love to use them as stitch markers. They don't snag the yarn. I saw one of the ladies at knit night knitting socks two at a time on two circulars. So I wanted to learn to do that. After knitting my first pair of socks, I quit wearing store bought socks and have knit many more pairs since.

auntien said...

My knitting bag weighs a tonne. I just checked and right now there are 4 projects. 3 circs with nothing on them, not sure why I'm carrying those; tin of yogenfruz candies; a novel; my spare camera lens; a bottle of water; about a zillion mini skeins for my sock yarn blankie; and a rubber dog bone...I have no idea why that's in there.

auntien said...

Won't let me edit, but in my previous post, this is also my Rav ID.

Ursula said...

The weirdest item in my knitting bag is a plastic bread bag clip. I've used it to hold the needles together when knitting magic loop and the circ is too short. It helps keep the side I'm not working from stretching too much. Worked in a pinch! Don't know where the idea came from but as they say, necessity is the mother of invention.

I've knit 2 pairs of socks up to now. The first 10 years ago left me ambivalent towards sock knitting. The second, finished 3 weeks ago finally lit the fire. Can't wait to start the next pair!

I keep a spare car key in my knitting bag. My husband never knows when he will finish work, so when he calls to be picked up, I just grab my knitting bag and go. Then if he suddenly gets busy, I can sit and knit!

The strangest thing(s) in my knitting bag are those plastic things that hold the end of a loaf of bread closed....not the twisty ties, but the square-ish ones with the little slot in it.
When I cast on for something like sleeves that I know will need to be seamed up later, I leave a long tail to use for seaming so that I have less ends to weave in later, and I wrap that length of yarn around the plastic piece so the tail isn't in my way while I knit.
When I'm finished knitting, I unwrap the yarn and, voila, I'm ready to sew the seam!

Oh I LOVE the Neverending Story! Time to read it again. You should absolutely name that pattern "Mondenkind" (if I recall the name Bastian gave her correctly)!

Sad face :( that I can't enter your contest, as I'm in Germany, but I'll tell you anyway how I came to sock knitting: I inherited my Grandma's needle collection and I just HAD to use the DPNs for something and at that time , I didn't wear hats at all!
So I went out and bought a knitting magazine that had socks in it and got knitting.

malia said...

Honestly I got into sock knitting because I'm kind of a knitting pattern whore. I'd say at this point I have almost as many patterns as I have yarn. There were so many pretty patterns out there for socks I just couldn't resist.
As far as weird, on occasion I keep bobby pins in my knitting bag. They work as Knit Klips when it is time to seam and as a tapestry needle in a pinch.

I keep one of those little folding booklights in my knitting bag, which isn't so strange by itself, but when I'm knitting something small in a low light situation I stick it into my cleavage so the light shines on the knitting, which some people might view as strange!

The strangest thing I have in my knitting bag is a thimble that belonged to my great grandmother. I know thimbles are for sewing, but whenever I see that I think of my connection to generations of women, creating things to keep family comfortable and happy. I got into sock knitting because when I first started knitting my grandmother challenged me to knit a sock. She said that it wasn't hard- or is wasn't any more difficult than anything else you had to learn. I can't stay away from a good challenge! (RAV ID katecreates)

Tied to the inside of my knitting bag is a "good luck charm" I made to try and help sell our condo a two years ago. It is a wooden disk that I put on a picture of St. Joseph, a little house sticker (because we were looking for a house while selling the condo), a picture of a bulldog (to go in our house), my lucky number (7), my husband's lucky number (13), a picture of a four leaf clover, and a picture of a rabbit's foot. It was buried in my couch (since I couldn't bury St. Joseph in the yard we didn't have). The condo has since sold and we now have a house. The collage charm is now filled with memories and makes me smile. Thus, I keep it in my knitting bag where I can see it all the time.

(smile) it almost always brings at least a grin, sometimes a little blush when folks spy it.

The strangest item I have is a little plastic Pikachu (Pokemon figure) on a jump ring. It could almost be a stitch marker except it's a little large, and I think the yarn would get hooked on his little arms too easily.
I love the pictures of the baby hummingbirds. We have hummingbirds in our yard but I've never seen a baby one.

I had to go to my knitting box and check it out. Nothing really odd. I do tend to keep my old retired PDA in there. I also keep a tin (looks like an Altoid tin) but it's from Disney World called Pert & Perky Flavor Minnie Mouse & her Friends Peppermints....no mints left but it's great for holding my stitch markers, scissors and Chibi!

I'm Woolyeyes on Ravelry & I'd love this book! I've been knitting socks like crazy for years, I love to try anything new.

OK, I have 2 weird things in my knitting bag. First, I always have a pair of nail clippers in there, for clipping yarn. They don't take those away on an airplane! I... keep DumDums in my knitting bag. You know, the little lollipops that are only 15-odd calories each?

I started carrying them about three months ago, shortly after I quit smoking. I'd been doing really well with kicking the addiction... and then I saw The Mistake. Not just any mistake. Oh no. The scary, glaring evil kind of mistake that means ripping back past the heel on a sock that is nearly done.

My friend was sitting nearby, watching, when I threw my knitting down, and yelled, "GRAH! It's ruined! I need a smoke!" She handed me a DumDum, without a word.

Needless to say, I am still smoke-free 3 months later. :D

Not sure how weird it is, but it sure is handy! I have this little thing that looks like a tiny crochet hook at one end, and like a dentist pick at the other - it works great to unpick knots and tangles in sock and lace weight yarns! As for why I started knitting socks: my son, who was in college in Chicago, told me "Enough sweaters, Mama! I have two drawerfuls!" So I started making socks for him instead (and all his buddies), and now I love how different one pair can be from another, depending on yarn and pattern. It's like making variations on a theme, and so much faster than sweaters!

The oddest thing I have in my sock knitting bag is probably this little tool that is a small crochet hook on one end and about a size 3 knitting needle on the other. I use it ALOT when picking up stitches on a gusset.

I relearned to knit about 3 years ago, and the lady who helped me out started me out on a dishcloth, then moved me right on to socks. She made beautiful socks, and told me a lot of people were afraid of them, and that it was silly to be that way. So my second project was socks.
