another free sock pattern ...AND A CONTEST

my pattern for "fly away home" is now available at the crystal palace yarns website. i love the panda wool more than the panda cotton; but i am partial to wool anyway.

"fly away home"
panda wool in lacquer red colorway
2.25mm needles/gauge 9 sts/inch

close-up so you can "see" the ladybugs (which my co-worker could never see-sigh)

i really love knitting with panda wool. i love that little shiny thread of bamboo. my only complaint is the yardage. this is the second pair (well, technically one and a half pairs since i only knit one sock for a sample and sent that to susan ;o} ) of socks i have made with panda wool and i always get to the end wondering if i am going to get one sock out of the skein. this is how much i had left this time. i, of course, keep insisting on knitting with a tight gauge which uses more yarn.

the good news is that, in the future, the yarn is going to be spun just a tad thinner and will gain about 20(?) yards. anyway, there will be less stress in this household.

i have been itching to have another contest. i had so much fun reading your answers to my last question. this time, i am giving away 2 skeins of panda wool in the lacquer red colorway so you can knit your own pair of "fly away home".

lisa never claimed the panda cotton (rosewater) from my last contest so i am also throwing that back into the contest. in case you were wondering, karen is now playing with the panda cotton in the beautiful "seascape" colorway.

leave me a comment. i would love to know what sock pattern you are absolutely dying to knit but have never gotten around to. tell me if you want the panda wool or panda cotton as a first choice. and if you could just add a last initial, state, or something so i can tell your first names apart, please. i will draw two names this weekend.

I love your sock patterns. I would love to try Menehune Cobblestone but have several pairs of others already on the needles (seven pairs to be exact). I would love to have the Panda Wool.

There are so many patterns I want to knit!! One that has been in my mind for awhile is Lombard from MagKnits.

Although the pattern you just came up with might be my next one!!

Even though I live in Texas I still prefer wool to the cotton yarn.

I would love to try the panda Wool for one of the dozens of patterns I can't wait to start.
Your patterns are just great!

I suppose this might sound untrue - but I'm captivated by your "Gecko Eyes Pattern". I've never been to your site until today and, have 4 boys, I seem drawn to anything involving bugs, lizards, etc. I've had the page open for 10 mins now - just admiring the sock and figuring out the pattern. (Do you think this pattern would work with striping yarn or is solid best?)
Anyway - I'm excited to find your site - plan to be back!
I'd love to try the Panda Wool.
Thank you,

well i would have to say that this pattern would be wonderful to knit up. It looks so delicate but beautiful enough that I would love to knit it up during my spare time. I would use the panda wool as I am partial to wool socks anyways but I am sure it would be pretty knitted up in any yarn.

Your new pattern is just lovely! I adore your designs...

Oh my - so many patterns and so little time! Cookie A.'s Potomous (sp?) pattern intrigues me. I'd also like to knit your pattern Gecko Eyes with the little beads but haven't found beads yet...

Either yarn would be lovely - I suppose I'm partial to the wool since I live in sunny New Hampshire but love the cotton as well.

So nice of you to do this!

I'm on my first pair of Panda Wool socks, and I'm in love with this yarn. Just finished Cookie A.'s Mona socks with Louet Gems, and the yarn is a pain to work with. I have Cookie's Thelonius pattern, and I think the Panda Wool would be perfect for it.

I would love to knit the Monkey socks by Cookie, but I just never seem to have the chance to knit them! I'd like the Panda Wool.

Hi I had knit one sock in the monkey socks pattern and they didnt fit so had to frog them. I have been waiting to knit them again, but after seeing your pattern and your socks I absolutely love that pattern. I have to say that the monkey pattern will have to wait a little longer now. I would love to knit yours instead.
I would love to have the panda cotton but would be very grateful and happy with either one.
Oh and I live in Georgia....

Now that I've seen your new pattern, I'd have to say I'm going to be doing it soon for my daughter, who loves red and ladybugs! I'd love to try the Panda wool, would also be happy with the cotton, I'm a new sock knitter and haven't tried either yet. We don't have much for yarn choices in our LYS. Your socks are beautiful.-Stacey in NY

Are you serious? You want me to pick just one pattern? Okay, well, since I finished Thelonious...and I cannot easily choose just one pattern. I will give you two.

First, Millicent by Cookie A., and second is the Child's First Sock in shell pattern, by Nancy Bush.

I too prefer the wool to the cotton.

I've been looking at a lot of the crazy complex cable patterns, like the Baudelaire. Problem is, they're never in ym prefered gauge and those are a LOT of work to resize without distroying the pattern. Other problem is I have SO MUCH TO KNIT with just my own ideas that I rarely give myself time to knit someone else's ides. Love your sock, its a very simple and effective design. i'd be happy with either yarn if I am lucky enough to win!

Yeah for contests! I don't think I've ever come across your blog before, but I'm glad I did!

I've been dying to knit the Anastasia socks, and these http://knittingincolor.blogspot.com/2006/06/caledonia-socks-these-warm-socks-have.html - not to mention all the other great patterns out there!

I'm Anastacia Z from MA, btw... I'd love either of the yarn you are giving away, btw, but I think the cotton would be nice as my mom prefers cotton socks to wool

Well, the pattern I've been lusting after for months is Cookie A's "Twisted Flower" - but I started it last night, so I don't think that counts anymore. I'm halfway down the leg, and I still love it.

Besides that, one of these days (when I'm 20 lbs lighter and much more daring), I want to make the Lolita Legs stockings from some back issue of knitty.

And I'm partial to wool blends (and have been eying the Panda wool for quite some time now!), but wouldn't turn up my nose at the cotton/bamboo blend, either. Thanks for having contests!

This is the first time I have been to your blog- I love Geko Eyes. I am "into" anything with beads and the idea of using the beads for eyes is super cute. I have never tried panda yarn- mainly because I have never seen it- I live in Germany, but I am from CA and will be there this summer. Where, oh where can I buy nice sock wool in Sacramento and the surounding area? Last summer I was in a couple of yarn shops but didn't find much.

I am absolutely itching to get started on Cookie A's Thelonius and Twisted Flower patterns. It took forever to find the perfect yarn and now that I have it I had to push them to the back burner while I was knitting for DH and MIL and kiddos. Now that I have seen the ladybug pattern I might have to make Cookie wait while I knit Fly Away home. Love the pattern. I also can't wait to see your top secret The Knitter SOTM pattern in June. I know it will be terrific. Don't suppose you would give us a little hint?!? If I had to choose Wool would be my first choice but I would be equally happy with cotton too.

Great sock patterns.

I have many patterns I want to try. There are two waiting it the wings -- Lilacs and Kansas Harvest both by Jean Townsend. I started the Lilacs, but got off by 1/2 a row and have to restart them. The Kansas Harvest has been waiting ever since I first saw them 2 or 3 years ago. I think I have finally found the perfect yarn. Just have to get a cable needle small enough to be used with sock yarn.

What a fun contest. Both yarns sound lovely. If I win, please let the other person choose first.

Oh boy, I've loved Oh! My! Gecko Eyes! for some time, but I think the one I most want to do next is Titania's Revenge by Cookie A. and sold by Blue Moon Fiber Arts. Mostly because it's so pretty, but partly for the name ;o) I love the pretty new pattern you have too. It looks fun.

I'll cross my fingers and hope for the luck of the draw for the contest.

Thanks,

I would love to try your fly away home pattern but I would love to try the panda cotton. I am a new sockknitter so either one would be truly fine with me since I haven't worked with either yet.

I forgot to say I am on sock 2 using the Menehune Cobblestones pattern. I am using Trekking XXL.
Thank you for the pattern!

What pattern do I want to try? I want to do all the ones in Sensational Knitted Socks. I have a hard time choosing which one I want to do so end up doing a basic vanilla. I live in FL so I'm always interested in cotton blends, but I'd never say no to a wool either!
How fun for you to do this! I've never been to your blog before and you've got some great stuff here!

wow, those flyaway home socks look great. I have Panda wool in a gorgeous turquoise-y colorway, but would LUUUVVVVV more, for upcoming flyaway socks.

I may be too late, but I thought I would comment anyway. I would love to try either yarn. I want to some day knit Lucy Neatby's Fiesta Socks - I did the cuffs a long time ago but that was as far as I got. I think I need time to pay attention and learn some things so that some of these patterns I yearn to make can become a little more "mindless", but between a full time job and four kids (sort of another full time job) the time to actually "study" my knitting very thin on the ground.

Knit in peace,
Karen

Is it too late to enter? The sock pattern I have wanted to knit but so far have not done is the famous Pomotamous pattern by Cookie A. I once cast on for it, but my handpainted yarn pooled just terribly and I frogged it. I still want to knit them, just in another yarn.
Like you, I prefer wool over cotton, but my best friend needs the cotton blends. If I were to win, then, either Panda Wool or Panda Cotton would be very appreciated. I enjoy your blog and the lovely pictures. You are very talented to be designing socks. It's all I can do to keep up the the regular sock knitting, what with my full-time job! Thanks for sharing your yarn wealth with your readers!

I love your sock designs. There are not enough days to knit all the wonderful sock patterns all you talented designers keep coming up with! Some of my favorite "wish list" designs are: Flyaway, Thelonios, Clessidra, and Jeanie's Lilacs. I love the Panda Cotton. Thanks for all your contributions. Best regards,
